Stop the Presses!!!

Ok, this is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. I stumbled across these guys last night on a blog I was reading. Blogger Jam Donaldson describes them as "...reminding us that there is more to black music than clubs and ballin and booty shaking and that there are some of us that actually still know how to play an instrument.". Here's a bio from the official Nuttin But Stringz website:

You've heard the expression, "don't judge a book by its cover"; teenage brothers Damien and Tourie Escobar are a perfect example. When you first spy the New York duo's streetwise style, you may expect them to start rapping, but then you hear their violins, and an entirely profound and altogether surprising sound awakens from their souls. Dubbed N.B.S or Nuttin But Stringz, the talented young musicians play an intense blending of classical music, jazz, r&b, and yes, hip hop.

Tourie and Damien studied at the Juliard School of Music and Bloomingdale School of Music and have taken their mastered skill to startling heights to include the world famous APOLLO THEATER, JAY LENO SHOW and ELLEN SHOW, just to name a few.

Growing up in the inner city, Damien was the first to take up the violin at the ripe young age of eight. His passion for the sound was all the inspiration his older sibling Tourie needed. Their combined uniqueness and brilliance, along with support from a close family, makes it easy for NBS to push the envelope on their style and further mold themselves into future stars. The uproar building around N.B.S. started underground in Manhattan and their upcoming debut cd and stage show is greatly anticipated by the masses.

Bridging the gap between popular and classical genres, this duo is something to keep your ears open and your eyes on.

Finally, here's some video of them from an appearance they did on Jack's Big Music Show on the Noggin channel. They are AMAZING!

There are lots more videos of them floating around on YouTube, but I liked this one a lot because of all the little kids dancing. Awesome!!!!!!

P.S. Thanks to Tameka for having "Conversate" Is Not a Word on her blog list. One of my new favorite reads!

Hey! Thanks for the special mention! Jam's blog is goodness, she has a talent for toeing that thin line of being Black and Proud vs. Black and Angry! Teehee...The young musicians are phenoms; I love how their classical training has been incorporated into something one can enjoy without a suit jacket and tight ass shoes!

Yeah, I read several of her entries and she had me cracking up! And then I decided to visit her other site, hotghettomess.com and I lost it so many times. Some of those pictures are just insane!! In a funny, yet sad kind of way.
